About

Camille Renée Devid is a multidisciplinary, lens-based artist born in Amsterdam and raised in Curaçao. Working across photography, archival material, self-portraiture, poetry, and painting, her practice explores identity, memory, ancestry, belonging, and human connection.

Born between multiple cultures and histories, Devid grew up navigating questions of origin and belonging. With Dutch and Surinamese roots interwoven with Chinese, Portuguese, Creole, Indonesian, and Jewish lineages, she became increasingly interested in the stories we inherit and the ways they continue to shape us. Rather than approaching identity as something fixed, her work embraces it as an ongoing process of discovery.

At the heart of her practice lies the body as a living archive. A place where personal and collective histories intersect, where past and present coexist, and where memory settles into gesture, emotion, and imagination. Through layered portraits, landscapes, double exposures, archival fragments, and painted interventions, she explores the visible and invisible traces carried across generations.

Color functions both as lineage and as feeling. The light of a Curaçao childhood, the greys of loss, the sepias of care, and the hues of inherited memory become part of a visual language through which personal and collective histories are explored. Photography becomes a means of mapping what cannot always be seen: the connections between people, places, and generations.

While her work often begins with personal experience, its intention reaches beyond autobiography. Devid creates spaces for reflection, inviting viewers to consider their own histories and to recognize the connections that exist between one another. Through themes of memory, migration, ancestry, love, and loss, her work asks how a deeper understanding of ourselves might lead to a deeper understanding of others.

Her ongoing project Discovering My Colors brings these questions together through photography, archives, abstraction, and poetry. In 2025, the project was awarded the Photo Folio Review Award at Les Rencontres d’Arles. It will be presented during Les Rencontres d’Arles 2026 and has been nominated for the Madame Figaro Photo Award 2026.
